McGuire grew famous as the Air Force's "Gateway to the East," when its core mission became global mobility in 1945. In 1992, it became part of the newly reorganized Air Mobility Command. The 305th Air Mobility Wing served as the host wing from October 1994 to March 2009, when the newly activated 87th Air Base Wing assumed installation command.

The 87th Air Base Wing is responsible for providing installation support to the Department of Defense's only tri-service Joint Base. The wing also provides mission-ready, expeditionary Warfighters to support Unified Combatant Commanders in on-going military operations.

Furthermore, Airmen of the 305th MXS provide regional maintenance expertise, calibrations, and support to the northeast region consisting of 18 wings, and local support for our DoD and Joint Base partners.

The 87th MDG supports more than 42,000 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, retirees, civilians, and their families living and working on and around Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
