American pair Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton have edged Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in doubles to tie the Laver Cup after the first day in Berlin.

Carlos Alcaraz suffered a losing debut at the Laver Cup on Friday when he and Team Europe partner Alexander Zverev were defeated in straight sets in their doubles clash against Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton of Team World.

Carlos Alcaraz was beaten in doubles as Europe ended the first day of the Laver Cup level with the rest of the world team.

Team World's Frances Tiafoe secured his first-ever win over Russian former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory on Day 2 of the Laver Cup.

"Our goal is to give people an experience that is so great they want to do it again!" said the Laver Cup's chief executive officer Steve Zacks while announcing a five-year extension to the tournament's partnership with the ATP.

Roger Federer retired two years ago but his connection to tennis remains stronger than ever. The return of the Laver Cup is another reminder that he never left the stage.
