New York Islanders principal owner Scott Malkin and co-owners Jon Ledecky and John Collins made an aggressive move on Tuesday, pulling the plug on Lou Lamoriello’s tenure as president and general manager after seven years.

Hiring Barry Trotz as head coach and building an eventual two-time conference finalist that was just a shorthanded goal away from the Islanders’ first Stanley Cup Final since 1984 gave Lamoriello a legacy on Long Island that’s likely to outlive the mediocrity of his last few seasons.

The 82-year-old Hall of Famer spent the last seven years running the Islanders' hockey operations, and nearly 50 years as a front office executive.
