After a devastating fire at an assisted living facility on Oliver Street, Fall River residents are mourning the dead and looking to help the survivors.

A survivor of Sunday’s Massachusetts blaze claimed staff fled the burning building, leaving elderly residents to fend for themselves — while another said workers didn’t even knock on doors to alert them as flames spread.

Cockroaches, mice and beds without sheets were normal at Gabriel House in Fall River, a resident said a day after the deadly fire. “They didn’t care about people’s lives."

Gabriel House residents described a chaotic scene Sunday night before they were rescued from the blaze that left nine dead and dozens more injured.
