The Border 2 Fire was 40% contained Monday, up from 10%, with the National Weather Service's forecast of rain prompting optimism from Cal Fire that it "should mitigate fire activity, helping fire crews to continue strengthening containment lines."

Border 2 Fire initially started 1:58 p.m. Jan. 23 in San Diego County. After being active for 47 hours, it has burned 6,624.8 acres, an increase of 125 acres since the last update. A fire crew of 1,177 effectively contained 10% of the fire by Saturday afternoon. The blaze's cause remains under investigation.

As of Sunday morning, the fire remains just 10% contained. The blaze, which began just west of Doghouse Junction in the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area, had blackened an estimated 6,625 acres by Saturday afternoon,
