HANOI: Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Vietnam in three decades, swept through the country on Sept 7, leaving behind severe damage, widespread flooding, and deadly landslides.

The death toll from a devastating typhoon and its aftermath in Vietnam has risen to 233. State media reported the increased numbers Friday as rescue workers recovered more bodies from areas hit by landslides and flash floods.

The death toll in Vietnam from Asia's worst storm this year reached 127 on Tuesday, with torrents of rain triggering floods and landslides, burying homes, sweeping away a bridge and now threatening the capital Hanoi.

Vietnam is preparing for more flooding with a tropical depression forecast to strengthen into a storm as it heads to its central coast, days after typhoon Yagi set off floods and landslides that killed more than 290 people in the north.

The death toll from Typhoon Yagi and its subsequent rain that triggered floods and landslides has climbed to 87 as 70 others remain missing and hundreds were injured, state media said.

The “super typhoon” shuttered airports and wreaked havoc on roads in Hanoi and surrounding areas in northern Vietnam.

Prior to reaching Vietnam on Saturday, Typhoon Yagi made landfall in the Chinese island of Hainan — a popular tourist destination — as well as various locations throughout the Philippines, where at least 20 people are believed to have been killed. In China, four deaths were reported with dozens of people missing in both countries.

Typhoon Yagi, which hit Vietnam earlier this month, exposed the country's lack of preparedness for extreme weather and raised concerns more storms could hit the country this rainy season, experts told VOA.
