County Supervisor Jim Desmond testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security in Washington on Wednesday, telling lawmakers that the arrival of so many migrants — many of them asylum seekers — has strained San Diego County’s resources and raised concerns about how border-crossers entering the U.

San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas is running for a second term to represent the residents of District 1. She is running against Alejandro Galicia, but he has not raised any money, giving Vargas an extremely easy path to re-election.

During a public comment period Wednesday, supervisors heard from South County residents, some of whom said environmental conditions had caused them and family members to become ill.

The former top Border Patrol agent for the San Diego area testified at a hearing on the border crisis that pimps were taking advantage of young female migrants after they were released into shelters.

The commissioner credited the agents and officers for helping bring down the number of unlawful entries into the U.S.
