Currently, the 305 and 786 area codes serve all of Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. The new 645 area code will co-exist with the other two throughout the region, PSC stated.
The new area code, which is known in the telecommunications industry as an "overlay," will be assigned in the same territory as the 305 and 786 area codes that cover Miami-Dade County and the Keys.
Currently, the county uses both the 305 and 786 codes. In 1998, 305 area codes were exhausted which led to the addition of the 786 code. According to reports, the 786 code will be exhausted by 2024.
