Thousands of community organizations, labor unions and human rights activists filled the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, marking May Day, also referred to as International Workers' Day.

May Day immigration marches. While labor and immigrant rights are historically intertwined, the focus of May Day rallies in the U.S. shifted to immigration in 2006.

As a result, Memorial Day falls on the last Monday of May, which this year was on May 26. The last time the holiday fell on that date was in 2014. But it turns out Memorial Day can be even earlier.
