Colorado Democrats needed all four remaining Senate contests to swing their way to gain a supermajority in the state Senate. At 11:49 a.m. on Thursday, AP called state Senate district 15 for Republican Marc Catlin over his Democratic opponent, Cole Buerger. Catlin bested Buerger by about 4%, or 3,500 votes.

Sen. James Coleman, a Denver Democrat, will lead the Colorado state Senate as its president after Tuesday’s elections affirmed the party’s large majority in the chamber.

James Coleman, who has been serving as the Colorado Senate president pro tempore, ran unopposed for the position.

Colorado Senate Democrats elected Sen. James Coleman of Denver to serve as the next Senate president. Coleman, who previously served as president pro tempore, was elected as the sole nominee for president during the Senate Democratic Caucus’s leadership elections Friday.

On Friday Senate Democrats gathered over Zoom — a change necessitated by the snowstorm sitting over the Front Range — to select new leaders for the upcoming legislative session. House Democrats will meet on Monday in the hopes that the few outstanding races will be called by then.
