House Bill 718 will let car dealerships keep metal plates on hand to give to people who buy vehicles, eliminating the need for temporary paper plates.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has begun rolling out new paper license plates as part of on-going effort to prevent fraud.

A Texas law aimed at eliminating paper license plates will go into effect on July 1, 2025. Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill in June 2023.
