NEW YORK (AP) Artturi Lehkonen scored the tiebreaking goal with 14.7 seconds left and Mackenzie Blackwood made 33 saves and the Colorado Avalanche defeated the New York Rangers 5-4 on Sunday.

Jared Bednar has been known to rely heavily on his top forwards, often overplaying the top line to the point where some nights you wouldn't know the Avalanche were even dressing 12 forwards. That was not the case in Sunday's 5-4 win over the New York Rangers.

To say the new guys, Martin Necas and Jack Drury, were worth the trade of Mikko Rantanen is way too soon, and I would never. But, we have to look to the future because what’s done is done and there are still 31 games to be played.

BOSTON -- Martin Necas and Jack Drury each made his debut for the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Saturday. The forwards were acquired Friday in a three-team trade also involving the Carolina Hurricanes and Chicago Blackhawks that sent Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall to the Hurricanes.

Geekie, who has scored the Bruins first goal in three straight, has seven goals in January and 14 in his last 28 games.

But Colorado’s NHL team has long had a reputation for being a quiet bunch in the locker room, even when this group reached the top of the mountain in 2022. The 2024-25 edition started the season slow, bogged down by injuries and poor goaltending. It weighed on everyone. A generally quiet room seemed even more so at times.

The Colorado Avalanche (27-17-1) continue their homestand against the Edmonton Oilers (28-13-3). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. MT but could be pushed back to 7:50 p.m. since it’s the second part of a double-header on ESPN.
