A state legislator is moving to outlaw the sale of flavored nicotine pouches, despite the federal Food and Drug Administration’s endorsement of the product’s potential health benefits in helping smokers cut back or quit cancer-causing cigarettes.

Last month, the FDA authorized the sale of 10 Zyn flavors, marking the first time the agency has backed the public health benefits of any brand of nicotine pouches. The FDA affirmed in a news release that while “there is no safe tobacco product,” the pouches provided a less risky alternative to cigarettes and other smokeless tobacco.
