They quickly knew it was really, really old: The pipe was made of wood staves held together with metal bands, sort of like a tubular barrel.

The pipes that King County Wastewater managers are depending on are antiques carved from Northwest forests. "It's two 36-inch wood-stave pipes, they were built in 1935," said Franklin.
