The Triangle and central North Carolina will experience rain, with possible thunderstorms, and high winds Sunday before a cold front approaches the region. By mid-week, a winter storm system is predicted to bring snow, freezing rain and sleet to the area, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey has issued a high wind warning in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday. That will be combined with rainy weather throughout the day

Areas north and west of the Triangle would have the region’s best chance of frozen precipitation accumulation, the forecasters said. Still, Raleigh could see freezing rain between 1-4 a.m. Wednesday, followed by sleet after 4 a.m. The chance of precipitation Wednesday is 80%.
