Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday dismissed the announcement from Ecuador's president a day earlier to apply tariffs on Mexican goods, noting that her country's trade with Ecuador represents a tiny share of exports.

Ecuador will apply the tariff to “ensure fair treatment” of Ecuadorian producers, President Daniel Noboa said on Monday.

Ecuador's conservative president said Monday that he is raising tariffs on Mexican imports in a move that echoes the trade barriers that U.S. President Donald Trump announced — but then paused — against Mexico.
