Language app Duolingo and Crunchyroll – the Netflix of Anime – hope the answer is simple; a new, entertaining, and dare we say, ‘tanoshii’ (i.e., “fun”) way to learn Japanese.

Crunchyroll is also sharing a roundup of anime featuring simple, easy-to-understand Japanese for language learners who are just getting started. These shows include Bananya, Laid-Back Camp, and more.

Touching on themes as disparate as sex and death to science fiction and romance, manga and anime caters to all ages and tastes, and historical hits projected a new image of Japan to the world.

Anime often explores spiritual and philosophical questions by drawing on Japan’s religious traditions to examine themes of fate, self-sacrifice and the struggle between desire and duty.
