The City of Calgary parks department has started a program to cut back and remove Caragana from five parks this spring and summer.

The caragana, originally imported from Siberia, was planted in the city decades ago to help prevent erosion on hillsides and help with soil stabilization.

This will enable the planting of Caragana trees, a shrub that can grow in desert climate conditions which receive only 170 milliliters of rain annually.
