Captain Hook is introduced, and another tragic layer is peeled back from Rumpelstiltskin’s psyche in “Once Upon a Time’s” ironically titled episode “The Crocodile.” It starts with Belle.

Rumpel, as The Dark One, was a mess before Belle started to break down his walls. And when he lost her to Regina and the curse, he reverted back to his terrible self.

In the “The Outsider” episode of “Once Upon a Time,” Hook is finally able to confront Rumpelstiltskin, and Belle is able to show her heroic side (twice) -- but not without a price.

Meanwhile, Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) fell even further behind in his pursuit to get Belle (Emilie de Ravin) to forgive him.

I'm not saying that Belle doesn't have a personality, because she does. I'm just saying that we've seen more of Rumpelstiltskin's backstory and motivations than we have of Belle's.
