The Mountaineers won at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time in 12 tries, ending the Jayhawks' 33-year winning streak in conference openers.

The Jayhawks, who opened as double-digit favorites over the Mountaineers, were outplayed in most aspects, falling behind by as many as 18 points. By the time KU recovered, it was too late; the Jayhawks’ wild comeback bid fell short.

Javon Small hit a free throw with 1.8 seconds left as West Virginia defeated No. 7 Kansas 62-61 on Tuesday in Lawrence, Kan. It was West Virginia's first win at Phog Allen Fieldhouse in 12 visits. Kansas, which had not lost a conference opener since January 1991 against Oklahoma, overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to tie the game.
