After a dry snow season so far, avalanche danger across Utah's backcountry is expected to skyrocket this weekend. “These are the types of avalanches that catch, carry and kill people,” said avalanche forecaster Trent Meisenheimer.

The expected snowfall was heavy enough to cause widespread avalanches that could kill a person, the alert warned.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center forecasted harsh conditions for both recreation and travel impacts. It said conditions are just right for avalanches to happen over the next couple of days.

A man rescued his brother from a “large avalanche” he triggered while the pair were snowmobiling in Utah on Wednesday, authorities said.

The family, who was not immediately identified, was in Cache County’s Logan Canyon when one of the brothers triggered an avalanche as he rode across a steep slope beneath a section of rock face, according to an incident report from the Utah Avalanche Center.
