Bangkok has described the scam centers as a "national security issue". On Feb. 5, Thai authorities cut off the electricity supply to five areas in Myanmar where fraud centers are allegedly located. In January, Chinese actor Wang Xing was reportedly rescued from a cyber fraud center in Myanmar.

China’s leader Xi Jinping and visiting Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra have vowed to crack down on the scam networks that plague Southeast Asia as the two met in Beijing.

Ms Paetongtarn told Mr Xi that Thailand looks forward to strengthening top-level exchanges and working more closely in areas such as connectivity, economy, trade and agriculture. It will also work with China and neighbouring countries to strengthen law enforcement, said a Chinese statement of the meeting.

The Chinese leader also thanked visiting Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra for her government’s actions against online scamming compounds in Myanmar.
