"Superman" director James Gunn has revealed why modern superhero movies cannot rely on surprise crossovers, cameos and team-ups anymore.

Speaking at a Q&A at the HMV Store London (as reported by ComicBook.com ), Gunn revealed that he was originally approached to direct a Superman film for DC back in 2018.

There’s an impending natural disaster. There’s two countries going to war. There’s a rich, arrogant billionaire tech bro who wants to rule the world. This sounds like a job for Superman!
