Trading Mitch Marner was never going to make the Toronto Maple Leafs better overnight. In fact, it’s fair to say it made them worse, at least on paper.

Toronto did acquire Nic Roy from Vegas, a heavy, reliable third-line center who should bring some much-needed sandpaper in the playoffs. The Maple Leafs also traded for Matias Maccelli, a young, talented winger who saw steady point production with the Arizona Coyotes and Utah Mammoth.

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded Ryan Reaves to the San Jose Sharks late Thursday night, marking the end of an underwhelming stint that ended just days after Reaves publicly criticized Toronto fans. The Leafs sent Reaves, 38, to San Jose in exchange for 24-year-old defenseman Henry Thrun. Both players are entering the final season of their contracts.
