The two museums are not connected. The National Gallery faces onto Trafalgar Square, whereas the National Portrait Gallery is located behind it. While they have paid exhibitions, many of the rooms are free to view! Stop over across the road in the crypt if you're in the area where you can do some brass rubbings!
